The problem with deadlifts, is that as you see in gyms and even personal training studios all over the country, is that people perform deadlifts HORRIBLY. Doing so is a great way to put undue pressure on the fragile discs in your back and so please make sure you do them correctly and you can ALWAYS work on improving your technique, even when you think you know what you're doing. Deadlifting is an awesome exercise for many people, helping to burn bodyfat, work all the muscles you can't see in the mirror like your hamstrings, glutes, lower and upper back. The problem is, most people simply don't know how to deadlift.
Additionally, deadlifts really make you work hard and get your heart rate up, promoting better posture, improving core strength and helping to remove back pain.
