Welcome to the first of our three part series on making yourself feel totally awesome.
The first thing many people do is try to identify why they feel so bad. Is it due to a lack of sleep, higher than normal stress levels, or are other people getting you down? Many people just sweep these feelings under the carpet and resolutely decide that they will get more sleep. Unfortunately, that rarely happens, because life gets in the way and the exhausted, run down feelings fail to get better. At The Active Lifestyle we are all too familiar with this constant life battle, and recommend our clients to try making a few small changes to get them back to their best, quickly.
Simply sleeping more (or, trying to sleep more) often doesn’t solve the issue. I’m not arguing that sleeping more doesn’t help, but there are three important things that you can do that will give you improvements fast.
What you need to do, firstly, is set out some time aside in your day for yourself. This will allow you to actually carry out the tips that we are suggesting and both see and feel the improvements happening.
Meditation is an age old practice and its benefits are enjoyed by millions of people all around the world. Many people have heard how good meditation is for them, but due to not feeling ‘immediate’ success with it, they give up and stop trying. It’s time to ignore then need for instant gratification and spend 10 minutes a day just trying to meditate.
To start meditating, you need to sit somewhere comfortable, and just focus on your breathing and how your body feels. Many people complain of the natural chatter and busyness in their minds as they think about things they need to do or things that are in their head. Ignore this – simply focus on your breathing, feel and enjoy each breath as you breathe in, and out, in, and out. Perhaps try counting these, as it will give you something to focus on. Mindfulness and Meditation is the process of being in and enjoying the moment, ignoring everything around you, and become attuned to how your body feels at that particular moment in time. Everyone we’ve ever talked to that has tried and stuck to meditation has seen results from it – they feel better, their mind feels clearer, and they feel less stressed and more energetic as a result.
We understand, you are mad busy, and the last thing you can think about doing is stopping for a minute and doing nothing, but put your mind to it and treat it as a learning process. The benefits are there, you just have to put some effort into actualising them. Day 1 might suck, but Day 10 will be much better – like anything else you are trying to learn, time is a massive helper. Set yourself 10 minutes a day where you teach yourself how to meditate, and relax your mind. Your body will thank you for it. When I first started to meditate, I used a phone app called Headspace which is a guided 10 minute meditation. It really taught me a lot about how to get along with mindfulness! It's free, try it below!
